The days where the internet was dominated by people communicating or buying products are over. Now users spend 47% (up 37% from four years ago) of their time reading and watching content. The study from the Online Publishers Association (OPA) found that the time Internet users spend viewing online content is up 37% from four years ago.

BitTorrent plans free streaming TV Service

BitTorrent will roll out a service which lets users watch part of their media library of TV and Films, for free supported by advertising. But will users go to BitTorrent for the digital content needs? Or will they stick to the network sites which have created a much improved streaming experience? Only time will tell.

Mobile Broadband Users to Pass 1 Billion by 2012

Juniper Research projects that globally, almost one-third of subscribers will use a mobile broadband connection by 2012. Totaling over one billion users, driven by North America, Western Europe and to a smaller degree the Far East and China. This numbers can only be reached if the technology exists to use the broadband. The availability of devices that work with the broadband technologies, such as laptops, mobile phones, media players or other portable devices will the decide the rate of growth.

Cuban upping ante on VOD

 Mark Cuban is at it again with his new strategy called Ultra HD Video on Demand. The service will be offered up to DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, Charter, Verizon and other cable-network distributors as an add on to Cuban's HDNet. The catch, films will be shown on HDNet before, or on the day of the film's release in movie theaters.

Universal Music to sell songs without copying constraints

Universal Music Group announced it will test DRM-free music sold through Real's Rhapsody, Wal-Mart, Amazon, and Google, but will leave Apple's iTunes Plus DRM-free music store out of the loop. Universal aims to release the tracks through music distributors next January. Needless to say Universal will keep close eye on sales and piracy, which will ultimately determine if Universal offers its entire catalog in a DRM free format.

CinemaNow Extends Video Download Service to Xbox 360s

 CinemaNow, the PC movie download and rental store, will allow rented or purchased movies to be played through the Xbox 360. When you purchase or rent a movie, PC will detect your Xbox360 and stream the movie through it and onto your big screen.
